DoC's Investigation into AVG 8 rumors...

Today I was checking out some of the boards to see how well the new Freeware AVG version 8 is being accepted. I also wanted to know what problems and issues people are having with it. I was surprised to see some negative comments and speculation stated as fact that the newest AVG anti virus has a flaw. They were claiming that the email protection only lasted for 30 days, then it would be crippled. I found it hard to believe. I started snooping around some more and my overall impression was that there weren't any serious problems with it.

So, I thought I'd get it from the "horses mouth" so to speak and headed for the AVG website. My biggest complaint about the AVG website is that they hide the freeware version pretty well. I knew the actual URL to go to but I wanted to perceive it from the average users point of view.  It was nowhere to be found. Lots of links to their paid versions but no free download link inside their main website. The secret is of course that the freeware site is actually a sub-web of their main site. The URL is http://free.grisoft.com.

Anyways I also stumbled on a pretty remote link to the rumor I spoke of earlier. They have a special page set-up that has the following statements:

  • Important information about e-mail scanning: from http://free.grisoft.com/ww.news.ndi-93837

  • Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet, AVG Free 8.0 does not include any "trial" or "time-out" functionality. Every option provided in the program is fully functional for the life of the product.
